Input tax credit claimed against a supplier whose registration was cancelled during the period is liable to be reversed with interest. This recipe finds those suppliers before the return is filed rather than after a notice arrives.
1Ask this
List suppliers with purchase invoices this quarter, with their GSTIN,
total taxable value and total GST, sorted by GST descending.2What a good answer looks like
A grid of business partners with GSTIN, taxable value and tax amount. The GSTIN column is what matters — the status check runs against it.
| Supplier | GSTIN | Taxable | GST | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Meridian Polymers | 27AAXCS0319L1ZS | 48,20,500 | 8,67,690 | Active |
| Kesar Packaging | 24AAACC1206D1ZM | 12,04,800 | 2,16,864 | Active |
| Arvind Trade Links | 29AAGCB7383J1Z4 | 7,65,200 | 1,37,736 | Cancelled |
3Then check the registrations
SAP holds the GSTIN but not its current status. Export the GSTIN column and run it through the GSTIN status checker, which reads the public GST portal and returns Active or otherwise for each one.
uv run run.py bulk suppliers.csv -o status.csvAnything not returning Active needs review before the credit is claimed. Cancelled is the clear case; Suspended usually means the registration is mid-proceeding and worth a call to the supplier.
4What to do with the result
- Hold the credit on invoices from any non-Active supplier for the period.
- Ask the supplier for their current registration certificate.
- Flag the business partner in SAP so the next purchase raises the question earlier.
